The Engagement Session Guide
Engagement sessions are a great way to make a statement! These pictures should be about who you are as a couple, not just poses in front of a camera. We’ve come up with some ‘dos’ (and a couple of ‘don’ts’) that unlock the secret of getting great engagement photos.
It’s about you!
Our engagement sessions are like a romantic date, just with the photographer following you! Focus on being together and having fun. You’ll find you’re more relaxed, and you’ll end up with beautiful memories to share with family and friends.
Express yourself!
Show us what make you, you! We want to see your personality and style – the people you and your fiancé are when together without the photographer following you!

Complement Each Other!
Choose clothing colors that complement each other and are in the same color family, but don’t feel like you have to match each other. Your clothing choices are a great way to emphasize how you and your fiancé complement each other as individuals!
Not black again!
It’s actually a myth that black is a universally flattering color. Instead, wear colors that make you feel good and compliment your skin tone. Look for outfits you might wear on a casual date, but don’t go for anything baggy or sloppy. The most important thing to remember is to wear clothes that make you look great. When you look great, you’ll feel great. And that energy will result in beautiful photographs!
To tan or not to tan?
Please limit your sun exposure before your portraits. Tan lines and sunburns are very difficult to retouch successfully, so the best way to avoid seeing those problems is to not have them in the first place.
What about sunless self-tanners or spray tans? We do not recommend the use of these products for photography because they present a number of issues. Sunless tanners tend to look very orange in photographs, and sometimes can look streaky. The best way to get great photographs is to go natural.
If you must have that sun-bronzed look, try a light oil-absorbing bronzing powder. Apply it lightly to your nose and cheeks for a natural sun-kissed glow.
We hope you’ve found these tips and tricks useful for your engagement session. Weather permitting, we will begin scheduling engagement sessions during the last week of March or the first week of April. If you’ve already booked your wedding with A Pioneer Photo, we’ll call you to schedule your session. If you haven’t, call us to reserve your session today!
